SUMMARY:Haringey Tree Wardens Guided Walk - Queen's Wood
DESCRIPTION:Guided Walk through Queen's Wood\n\nHaringey Tree Wardens
are pleased to announce the first of an annual look at the trees in th
is lovely wood.\nOur guide for this event is Ian Holt, Nature Conserva
tion Officer for the London Borough of Haringey - one of the people di
rectly responsible for this publicly-owned resource. We are supported
by the wonderful Friends of Queens Wood and will be providing opportun
ities for attendees to get further involved in their work.Churchyard B
ottom was renamed Queen's Wood in honour of Queen Victoria in 1898. C
rouch End Clocktower is dedicated to the then leader of Hornsey Counci
l who helped secure it and several other Haringey green spaces in perp
etuity for public use. Now under the management of Haringey Council,
Queen's Wood is designated a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Natur
e Conservation - one of the best London has to offer. The management
of the Wood is a complex task involving the management of both wildlif
e and people where the desires of differing user groups are often in c
onflict with each other and potentially detrimental to the health of t
he Wood itself. We shall explore ways of providing a balance between
all of these conflicting issues with limited resources and look at the
wide variety of organisations from the GLA to Froglife working in par
tnership to achieve this. We will also look at some of the practical a
spects of management, in particular the effect of light levels upon th
e woodland flora and the reasoning behind coppicing, and holly control
. We will also touch briefly upon the wider environment and how the W
ood helps to control flooding and local air temperature as well as how
external impacts effect the Wood such as road run-off, invasive speci
es and the loss of habitat connectivity for wildlife.Part of our aim a
s Tree Wardens is to provide residents with pathways into more involve
ment with nature's tallest plants, so please consider getting involved
with appreciating and caring for the treescape. There is no charge fo
r attendance, but we do ask you to consider donating some money to hel
p us cover our year-round costs - £3 suggested.Meet us outside the ca
fe at 2pm: Map here: http://goo.gl/maps/XP9C6 kindly 'join' the even
