SUMMARY:Keeping our NHS Public - talk by Prof. Sue Richards
DESCRIPTION:\nSue Richards is a health campaigner on the Executive of
KONP (Keep our NHS Public) and one of the five applicants for the Judi
cial Review challenging the introduction of ACOs (Accountable Care Org
anisations) into the NHS, as well as being an academic and writer on p
ublic management. She co-chairs the CHPI (Centre for Health and the Pu
blic Interest) and worked in the Cabinet Office for several years. DON
’T MISS THIS!\n\nThis photographic exhibition, devised by Marion Mac
alpine, shows how we are on the brink of US style healthcare run for p
rofit rather than patients. It reveals the consequences and risks of p
rivatising the NHS.\nThe exhibition explains how privatisation is enco
uraged by the frequent and ongoing reorganisations of the NHS as it mo
ves away from the founding principle of free healthcare for everyone.\
nThe exhibition was created in 2014 and has been exhibited round the c
ountry since then. Some details relate to that period; but privatisati
on has been greatly extended. Corporate tentacles now reach into every
corner of the NHS. £3.1bn of health services were privatised in 2016
-17. The TTIP trade treaty has been resisted but other trade treaties
continue to give corporates huge rights over our NHS. Brexit means the
issues will live on in multiple trade treaties.\nThe NHS is undergoin
g yet another fundamental reorganisation. After ‘Sustainability and
Transformation Partnerships’(STPs), NHS and social care are being re
organised into local Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) and in time Integr
ated Care Organisations (ICOs). ICOs involve outsourcing NHS services
rather than providing them directly. The later exhibition panels expla
in how privatisation is encouraged and supported in this latest major
NHS reorganisation.\nSponsored by DENHS, which shares the aim of the m
any local groups across the country to publicise and challenge, in wha
tever way possible, the dismantling of our national treasure, the NHS.
In the words of Nye Bevan, the founder of the NHS ‘The NHS will las
t as long as there are folk left with the faith to fight for it.’\nw
