SUMMARY:N22 Jazz Festival presents: Henry Lowther - STILL WATERS
DESCRIPTION:Part of the EFG London Jazz Festival #wearejazz\n\nHenry
Lowther’s Still Waters perform some of the music from their well-rec
eived and popular recent CD, Can’t Believe, Won’t Believe.\nHenry
Lowther’s Still Waters was born out a long association and friendshi
p, going back forty years, between Henry and bassist Dave Green who ha
ve both been described by many critics and reviewers as “National T
reasures”. They both felt that the time had arrived to play the musi
c of their choice, together with some of the finest jazz musicians wor
king in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most
accomplished, tightly ensembled and creative bands around. Although a
classic quintet of two front line and rhythm, Still Waters plays radi
cal and original music, ranging from gentle, quietly pastoral and melo
dic music, reflecting the band’s name, through to dynamic free impro
visation.\nBand: Henry Lowther - trumpet and flugelhorn, Pete Hurt - t
enor saxophone, Barry Green - piano, Dave Green - bass, Paul Clarvis -
drums\nStill Waters appearance at the Karamel is following its highly
successful Arts Council supported UK tour and at the Karamel, the ban
d will be performing some of the music from their well-received and po
 pular recent CD, Can’t Believe, Won’t Believe.\n\"Its beautiful, m
elodic compositions, superb collective and individual playing and pris
tine production values combine to make it a British jazz classic.\" th
e Jazz Mann.\nBorn in Leicester, trumpeter, violinist and composer Hen
ry Lowther is one of the great unsung heroes of British music. In his
childhood he played cornet with Salvation Army and colliery bands whil
e also learning classical violin at the behest of his mother. On leavi
ng school Lowther moved to London to study classical violin at the Roy
al Academy of Music but soon abandoned this to embrace the vibrant jaz
z and rock scene of the capital with the trumpet now his principal ins
trument. The prolific Lowther worked with anybody and everybody includ
ing Manfred Mann, John Mayall and Cream bassist Jack Bruce. Lowther ha
s been a professional musician for over fifty years and it’s practic
ally impossible to list all of his achievements.\nDoors open 7pm, musi
 c from 8pm.\nPhoto credit: Monika Jakubowska\n\nFor more information v
