SUMMARY:NAZRENE HANIF: WRITING A LIFE IN FRAGMENTS
DESCRIPTION:‘I think of it like a sort of magpie way of writing wher
e I collect things that seem shiny to me and build a nest around themâ
€¦â€™ Jenny Offill\nLife is by nature fragmentary. As the poet and aut
hor Maggie Nelson once said: ‘We can’t see the whole until we’re
dead, and then we can’t see it.’ When writing about our experienc
es, we must accept that the picture is incomplete. How do we piece tog
ether what we know so far, assemble the shards of memory to create a c
ompelling and comprehensive narrative?\nIn this class, we'll explore t
he possibilities of the fragmented form and play with structure and ge
nre through writing prompts. From Nelson to Chimamanda Adichie Ngozi,
Ocean Vuong and TS Eliot to Teju Cole – we'll read extracts from wor
ks of creative non-fiction, fiction and poetry, to learn different app
lications of the fragment and discuss their effects.\nWriting a life i
n fragments opens us to inspiration. Anything can be a tool for creati
on: an anecdote, a dream, a diary entry, a photo, a text message, a qu
otation, a souvenir, a lost object. Students will be guided in generat
ing ideas from the fragments of their life, seeing the unfinished or a
bandoned as something worth preserving.\n26 February, 11am-1pm. Zoom d
elivery, cost £25\nNazrene Hanif explores ideas of (not) belonging, c
reating narratives that reflect her existence in between cultures, lan
guage and class.\nHer creative non-fiction has been published by Ache
magazine and received special mention in the Spread The Word Life Writ
ing Prize 2021. \nNazrene is based in London, often found elsewhere a
nd sometimes on Instagram: @nazrenehanif.\n\nFor more information visi
