  to thirty thousand have already died. There is a threat of wider war 
 in the Middle East, from which neighbouring countries could not escape
 . Turkish, Russian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Kurdish, Israeli, Saudi, Iran
 ian and Iraqi interests are all engaged, while the UN Security Council
  cannot act. The destiny of the Arab Spring is at stake and for some t
 he UN itself is on trial. There has been shelling across the Turkish-S
