This workshop creates a space for 6-12 yr olds to be immersed with their peers in Traditional Djembe Music. All Drums (Djembe, Dun-Dun, Sticks and Bells) are provided and the weekly sessions consist of musical building blocks and concepts to develop the young people’s understanding and musicianship through embodied learning, playing and fun. By exploring Traditional Djembe and Dun Dun Repertoire guided by ETC Musical Director Skanda Sabbagh, students will discover Rhythm, Technique, Syncopation, Time Signatures, Composition, Improvisation and a lot more along the journey.
African Music is the expression of collective and individual joy and vitality it is also a show of ability and intellect. Although we have a lot of fun, this informal learning process has a number of transferable skills.
• Valuable Alternative Vocational Learning achievements
• Co-ordination and development of motor skills to play specific rhythms
• Recognition, learning and memorising of Patterns
• Use of Memory to retain music of Aural Tradition
• Ability to set achievable yet ambitious goals and observe personal progression.
• Developing character through musical expression
• Working as a Team to achieve creatively.
Drop ins and tasters are welcome but it is encouraged that students show dedication and the ability to work together as a collective towards performances. The Youngers Drumming Ensemble is also linked to our African Drumming Community Partnership which aims to assist young people in their transition between primary and secondary education. This workshop also provides the opportunity for E.T.C Teenage Drummers to support, volunteer and gain work experience to add to their C.V.
Youngers African Drumming Workshop is held every Wednesday from 5 - 6pm at Everyone's Climbing Tree, 141 Station Road, N22 7ST. For more information and booking please email us at everyonesclimbingtree@gmail.com. We are also available on Facebook at Everyone's Climbing Tree, Twitter at @Every1sCtree and on our website everyonesclimbingtree.co.uk.
We look forward to hearing from you!
