I've discovered this cafe which is away from the traffic and noise of Bounds Green, yet it is near the Tube station.

I took these photos last week while I was waiting for a train. I love the way the sunshine beams in on the coffee table and basks the venue in golden light. I've been buying coffee and porridge there for the last year and it is a nice, old fashioned venue set on the single platform of our local, hidden away, Victorian train station, Bowes Park, at the end of Myddleton…

It's open till 4pm every day and I recommend it to everyone who wants a peaceful hot drink and food during the day. Or somewhere interesting to meet friends at. It opens early in the morning to serve the commuters heading into London.

It's called Leafy Bean and it's owned and managed by staff who take a lot of care over the service and catering. Its a real gem and we are lucky to have an authentic and comfortable cafe in our community.

We are looking for a talented and experienced person to join our front of house team.

We serve freshly prepared, home-cooked and quintessentially British food - open for brunch, lunch and dinner. Our venue is very busy so the role requires a focused and adaptable individual who can liaise with the kitchen, serve food to tables and prepare a variety of hot and cold drinks to high standards.

The Step has a reputation for friendliness and excellent service so we are looking for a new team member who can create a mature and welcoming environment with a commitment to look after our customers.

Applicants must have 2+ years experience in a similar role. Barista experience is desirable but what is essential is a strong work ethic and sense of urgency with the ability to work collaboratively within our small happy team.

Their second cafe at Palmers Green Station is a delight, the building has had a very attractive makeover, it's stylish and comfortable, with a good strong coffee and a full counter of tempting treats.
This weekend across the UK people will be marking
Small Business Saturday by making a decision to support independent traders and local small businesses.

We've championed our local cafes, bars and shops - through Cash Mobs and Shop Local campaigns on this website.

One thing we can all do is to support our existing independents. In the run-up to Christmas it is the time when more money is spent than at any other time of year - and a time our local shopkeepers rely on to keep open and profitable - proving local jobs and a healthy local economy.

We can all choose to spend our money locally and support the type of local shops we want to see more of.

So This weekend make a point of visiting your local shops and restaurants - support the independent traders at Myddleton Road Market ... and if you are looking for a Christmas Tree try Ruby's Cave one of the recently shops in Bowes Park.
This Christmas - shop local and support our independent traderstag:bowesandbounds.org,2014-10-31:6278630:Topic:854362014-10-31T09:23:16.307ZRichard McKeeverhttps://bowesandbounds.org/profile/3hwxkqhdde8gc

Whilst it can be an expensive season - it is also the time when, through our purses and pockets, we can make the biggest difference to our local independent traders, restaurants and craftspeople.

If we all pledge to shop local, where we can, spending our money within our local community we could ensure our independent traders have a bumper season and guarantee our favourite shops and businesses remain open throughout the forthcoming year.

Gift shopping
There are many opportunities to buy original and distinctive Christmas gifts. The Chocolate Factory in Wood Green is home to dozens of artists and makers - and on the weekend of November 15th and 16th the Chocolate Factory Open Studios event is a great chance to meet local artists and buy one-off originals: jewellery, art, ceramics and clothing; direct from the maker.

Fast becoming a fixture on the calendar the Designer Craft & Art Fair on Nov 16th at Cannon Hill Southgate features innovative creations from 28 local designer makers all under one roof, for just one day. Gifts include Elizabethan inspired jewellery, graphic art, glass and textiles, original cartoons and recycled/upcycled artworks from from talented designers.

A Community Craft Market at Palmerston Road's TaB Centre on November 8th is another opportunity to seek out some individual gifts and of course the next Myddleton Road Market on December 7th will have a crafts and art theme. There will be lots of original pieces on offer as well as some distinctive vintage gifts from the regular traders.

Food shopping

Myddleton Road Market is also a great place to start your Christmas Food shopping - with lots of cakes, preserves, chutney and coffee potentially forming gifts and stocking fillers.

In addition since last Christmas the range of local specialist stores has increased with Hellenic Gourmet, Domipol and La Coppia each offering distinctive foodstuffs.

Eating Out

As well as a stylish deli counter La Coppia is also a great place to go out for a relaxed supper or a lively lunch; joining established favourites Fatisa on the corner of Woodside Park and of course The Step which just seems to go from strength to strength.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat out locally Pete's Haringey Menus experiment could provide some new ideas.

Overall there is lots on offer in our neck of the woods -as well as avoiding the crowds in the West End or Brent Cross, shopping locally supports our neighbours who run independent businesses and keeps the cash in our community.

Shop local for Christmas!
