Myddleton Road is a Victorian street in Haringey, with history, in more ways than one. For years local people have battled to ‘save’ it.

Multiple problems had conspired to prevent people shopping in the street, from an increase of homes of multiple occupancy and illegal dwellings to a lack of bins, crime and ‘shed sits’ in gardens.

Now we find ourselves winner of the London category of the Great British High Street awards, a competition that rewards high street innovation, and we’re excited.

Some local residents have been involved in Myddleton Road for years. They secured and managed a community garden, and more recently an outdoor gym and table tennis table. Hard work and small beginnings that gave our street a heartbeat.

The Bowes Park Community Association worked closely with the council and local councillors and this partnership has paid dividends – even if at times it wasn’t clear what could and would be achieved. It led to Heritage Lottery Funding (matched by the council) to restore some shop fronts to their Victorian splendour. It gave the street a lift and told the world it was worth investing in.

As is often true in life, a tipping point came around three years ago when a new business took a risk and invested on the street. The Step brought to all our attention the good and bad of Myddleton Road. People had passion for the place and our campaign group We Love Myddleton Road was born.

Agile and fluid, we haven’t spent too much time on the admin, focusing instead on action. As a new volunteer-led market developed, we partnered with it, running two festivals a year. We started small, just a little lantern parade on a car-riddled street in December. Now it involves road closures and is an all-singing, all-dancing event and this month ‘Santa-in-a-Camper’ came to greet our children at the Winter Festival. And for the first time we have a Christmas tree on the street.

On our journey we have begged, borrowed and cajoled: staging from a local school, local musicians to sing for free, tables from a church hall and good will and solid volunteering!

As local businesses have seen the effect of what we’re doing they have supported us – with pots of money, vans for transport and labour.

Our hyperlocal website bowesandbounds.org is the place for local residents to share views and ask questions. It has been fundamental in allowing us to reach the community and share what we’re doing. One of our significant achievements is a survey of 600 residents – asking them how and where they shop and what they want from Myddleton Road.

It’s a powerful tool to use with local landlords and traders. And it has led to one existing trader opening a second business, the top requested shop on the street: a bakery!

How have we got here? With perseverance, by using our different skills, and by building close partnerships with the council, traders, landlords and residents. By always looking for long-term relationship and effect.

We’ve run festivals, cash mobs, and photo competitions. We’ve written to landlords, fought planning applications, battled rubbish and litter. Sometimes our meetings attract ten people, sometimes four, but our mailing list keeps people informed and when something needs doing we put it out there and someone volunteers (usually!).

We started small – and we are still very much on our journey. Winning the award is such a great celebration of our community and what can be achieved when people come together. We’re not unique. So many communities are working hard to make a difference, as the awards demonstrate.

How do we sum up our special story? By the hundreds of people that shopped and celebrated at our recent winter festival? By the 160 children that saw Santa that day? Or perhaps by the teenage boy who came into one of the shops on the street and said ‘thank you for our Christmas tree’? That is what it’s all about.

The competition celebrates the work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets. Myddleton Road has been transformed in recent years with the arrival of committed new businesses and from local residents keen to supporting the resurgence of this much loved centre. Activities have included including regular street markets and Summer/Winter Festivals, organizing ‘cash-mobs’ to spend money on the street, and holding a photography competition – broadcast live on Twitter – to celebrate the character of Myddleton Road.

This year’s competition saw a record 900 entries across 14 categories. Now the shortlist has been drawn up, the public has the chance to vote directly for their best-loved high street online - so get voting and show that "We Love Myddleton Road"

To be crowned champion, Myddleton Road needs the votes of local people. Between now and November, people can cast their vote via the website at: thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk You can vote once a day - up until the closing date.

If Myddleton Road wins, not only will the street get a share of prize pot worth £100,000, but will also benefit from expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants and a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to further boost their social media skills.

For such a short street, with relatively so few properties, it is amazing how many planning issues there can be between no 49 and 143. All the owners and leaseholders know there are planning laws. Are they flouted because of ignorance, lack of consistency and enforcement by the council, or arrogance?

This is a Conservation Area. According to Haringey Council "Myddleton Road includes probably the best-preserved Victorian shopping centre in the Borough". It has had hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on it in hard cash by the Council in recent years and masses more in Officer time. Is it worth the Council spending more time on it just so that planning procedures are followed?

Some shop owners just go ahead and build bits at the back and hope no-one will notice or care. As for changes that one can see:

One owner built a bungalow in the back and unusually that got demolished due to an enforcement action.

Last year one property didn't bother to apply for planning permission to change the frontage – they had applied before for other things and it had taken a long time, so they decided they were not going to waste time and money.

In recent weeks another property has completely changed the shop-front with no permission, no discussions – wizz bang just like that.

Another large property had lengthy discussions with the council and did a good new 'heritage' - type frontage, but never applied for planning permission.

One large property applied for one thing, and then did another which involved taking out one of the original 19th century front.

One property applied, got permission, and then did something different – applied retrospectively for permission for that and has been refused.

One knocked out the front and put in a new one, the council told them to apply for permission for new front which they did, and the council took over two years to tell them that it was refused.

There is a bakery store behind one 'empty' shop.

There is storage for a restaurant in what should be two shops.

A restaurant altered its frontage with no permission either.

Does it matter that some people do it properly and lawfully and take the time and effort to do things properly, while others just put two fingers up? Just because the owner thinks it looks OK, better than before, does that make it right to do it without permission?

The jury is out.

In the current housing and development climate some developers think that they can get away with cramming poor quality, tiny housing units into the small spaces between existing buildings.

A new planning application has been made for the land to the rear of 58-60 Myddleton Road - adjacent to the outdoor Community Gym alongside the new River. The proposal is to build a new three-storey, three bedroom house in the back garden of the existing properties.

It is a remarkable proposal to turn the back gardens of two properties into a huge three storey house. A formal opposition to the plans will be produced by the Bowes Park Community Association and individual comments on the application can be submitted on the Haringey website

The piano was originally built at a time when Myddleton road was in its heyday as a new fancy Victorian era shopping street. Following refurbishment from the team at Renaissance it is now once more a great sounding and lovely looking musical instrument.

Paul and Daniel are bringing back some of that high class heritage with a personalised and bespoke local service – as well as selling pianos they also have a full service offer: tuning, refurbishment, French polishing and repairs – leaving each tuned to concert pitch.

Beyond the shopfront four newly built studios at the back are available for Paul’s team of local tutors to teach students. As well as piano tuition – to grade eight and beyond – lessons in, violin, viola and cello; clarinet, saxophone and guitar are also popular.

Tuition is focussed on the interests of the pupil - whether students want to play jazz, rock, blues or classical one of the 20 strong freelance tutors will be able to help, classes are for those playing for fun, those studying for GCSE and A-Level music and even professionals who are looking for mentoring or support with stagecraft. And after-hours the rooms are available for hire as rehearsal rooms, or interview spaces.

For this new venture Paul draws on his own solid and varied musical background as a performer, composer, producer and teacher. He studied at The Royal College of Music from the age of 13, having been awarded a scholarship. As a working musician he has an eclectic back catalogue, he toured with rock bands in the 1980s, played with Jazz Funk ensembles, pop bands and jazz groups. Performance include gigs at The Jazz Cafe, The 02 and Kensington Roof Gardens. At a Festival in St Petersburg in Russia Paul performed alongside artists such as Anastasia, Tony Hadley, Paula Abdul, Simple Minds and Mika – and was presented with a special award for his work.

It’s great to have another new, community minded, business in Myddleton Road - do call in and say hello when you are passing or contact by email info@renaissancemusic.co.uk and welcome Renaissance to Myddleton Road.

A new planning application number HGY/2015/1989 has been lodged with Haringey Council for number 109 Myddleton Road; a building which is currently operating as a Travel Agent. As it is a functioning business on Myddleton Road this is an important application.

A request has been made to reduce the size of the retail portion of the premises, and expand the rear flat. Although the application claims that it won't affect the viability of the current business, if the retail unit is smaller, it obviously limits the types of business that could move into this unit on Myddleton Road, in the future. In fact the reduction in size is likely make most retail activity here nonviable.

It is important in monitoring any new planning applications to stress that an upturn in the potential for retail on Myddleton Road should not be met with a reduction in retail space. Given the recent refurbishment of shopfronts in the street and the We Love Myddleton Road survey of local residents which indicated that local households have over £37 million per year to spend on groceries and £26 million each year on entertainment (Money that is currently spent outside Haringey) There is a need to ensure we retain retail and trading space on the road - and not increase the density of poor quality housing.

Hi,

Following the four refurbished shopfronts project that we celebrated last weekend, there have been a number of other shopfronts that have been independently improved.

The latest potential one is Altered States at 114 Myddleton Road. They have recently submitted an application for a new heritage shopfront, and I personally think that it is well worth supporting, with the proviso that it incorporates an internal rather than external shutter.
