Seven North London councils funding a huge new incinerator that will undermine climate action - Bowes and Bounds Connected2024-03-28T11:18:34Zhttps://bowesandbounds.org/forum/topics/seven-north-london-councils-funding-a-huge-new-incinerator-that?commentId=6278630%3AComment%3A141941&xg_source=activity&feed=yes&xn_auth=noThanks to Karl for looking in…tag:bowesandbounds.org,2020-07-02:6278630:Comment:1423082020-07-02T17:32:02.993ZMatthew Kitchinghttps://bowesandbounds.org/profile/MatthewKitching

Thanks to Karl for looking into this. My recollection is that NLWA focused on the Edmonton site after local residents challenged NLWA's plans to put a major waste processing plant at the Pinkham Way site opposite the Friern Barnet retail park and right next to our residential area with all the associated increase in bin van traffic (some 300 extra bin vans a day bringing waste from across several boroughs as I recall). There was always a risk that an incinerator would be built on the Pinkham Way site once NLWA were established there, that was one of the objections. Yes there is still an option on the site as it sits within the NLWA 'land bank' but it's important for local residents to understand that however undesirable NLWA's plans for the Edmonton site are, any campaign against it only serves to increase the risk of their plans to stick a major waste facility right on our doorstep.
Mathew Kitching asks if the p…tag:bowesandbounds.org,2020-07-02:6278630:Comment:1423012020-07-02T15:10:37.655Zkarl brownhttps://bowesandbounds.org/profile/karlbrown

Mathew Kitching asks if the proposed incinerator at Edmonton will mean no waste plant at Pinkham Way? It means there won’t be an incinerator, but beyond that all bets are still off.

To quote directly from the waste authority (NLWA) owners:

NLWA does not have any immediate plans for the use of Pinkham Way however it remains an important asset for the Authority and is considered essential to achieving statutory waste management functions in the medium term

As the medium term arrives (5 years hence?) they list a range of possibilities, and possibly all of them could apply at once. (I've deleted unnecessary references and words but otherwise this is as they submitted to the planning inspector last year):-

We agree that … Pinkham Way is suitable for recycling, Composting and waste transfer. Additionally, the site should be recorded as suitable for Waste treatment facility (including thermal treatment, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis / gasification, mechanical biological treatment)”. …(and ) … might be suitable for other types of treatments … for example anaerobic digestion …. and integrated resource recovery facilities / resource parks”. The site is well suited for use as an integrated resource recovery facility. It would receive waste in refuse collection vehicles directly from several boroughs – central location makes it ideal for this purpose. It is also of the right size for a facility of this nature and next to buildings which would be of a similar scale…. site as having potential for “Integrated resource recovery facilities/resource parks, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis / gasification, mechanical biological treatment Waste transfer, processing and recycling, indoor composting, in-vessel composting and outdoor composting. Thermal Treatment facilities may be viable but should only be considered if a combined heat and power facility could be incorporated into the facility and linked up to a district heating system”.
Is this the facility that mea…tag:bowesandbounds.org,2020-07-01:6278630:Comment:1419412020-07-01T18:08:02.920ZMatthew Kitchinghttps://bowesandbounds.org/profile/MatthewKitching

The deputations requesting pause and review of the incinerator included a group of doctors, 2 MPs from North London, a London Assembly member, and 3 North London councillors.

The meeting was a travesty of democracy. Important points made by most eloquent, informed speakers were not answered by the chair, dismissed as ‘ingenuous’, or deflected and green washed. To one of the councillors, the chair was downright rude.

Only one question was raised by another member of the board - brushed aside by the chair for 'the end of the meeting' - though not subsequently addressed. The rest of the board members, representing 7 London boroughs, were utterly silent. No vote on pause and review was apparently taken either.

I will not reiterate the arguments surrounding the rebuild. But I am asking you to watch the video for yourself and witness the gross abuse of power that took place there, and take your concerns to Enfield Council by writing to your local councillors and MP. Ask them to watch the video.

The chair of the NLWA board (whose arrogance and posture chillingly reminds me of Jacob Rees-Mogg) oversteps all democratic conduct and should be removed, so an open, democratic, honest and fair discussion can commence about the Incinerator.

The video is long, but will, I'm sad to say, make your stomach turn. Here is the link again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiqaAW4hV0U
