We have just moved to the area and aren't yet in a local school (on waiting lists for Bowes, Bounds and Hazelwood and commuting to old school in Stoke newington). I'd really like my two girls to make some local friends. Can anyone recommend any great clubs for 5-8yr olds? Like brownies, dance or art clubs maybe? Also good places for swimming lessons too please?

  1. Welcome to the area.  What age are your children?  I know that there are 2 children leaving my son's year at Bounds Green (will be Year 3 in Sep), so there might be a space available there.
  2. The tennis club at Albert Rec over the Summer holidays would be a good place to meet local children.  Its inexpensive and flexible too (you can normally turn up & book on the day: half-days, full days, early drop-off/late pickups etc)
Thanks Shona.
My eldest is Y3 in September. I'll keep hounding the admissions team. Is Bounds Green also being extended? Fingers crossed for a place.
I'll try the tennis club. Thank you, that really helpful.

Our children are probably the same ages then (Younger boy will be in Year 1 in Sep).
Yes, BG is expanding to 3 form entry, but that won't affect availability for older children, as it will start with the September Reception intake onwards....
Good luck!
For swimming, there are lessons at Park Road (the other side of Ally Pally), and at Arnos Pool (near Arnos Grove tube).  Also one nr Southgate tube I think.  Lots of people (us included) use Oakleigh Park - https://www.swimoakleighpark.co.uk/

Hi Hevb and welcome!

My children are quite a bit older, but like Shona I would recommend the tennis lessons and summer camp that run at the local park - Albert Rec.  Both of mine have gone to these since they were really young (around 5).  It's handy for childcare in the summer (although the cost can add up if you are doing a full week and paying for two) and is also a good way to meet other local kids.  It's really well organised and run and both of mine have really enjoyed going.

For swimming lessons we went to the Edmonton Phoenix club lessons at Southbury pool - the facilities are great and the club well organised.  On the down side it is a bit of a drive.  I know a lot of people use Park Road.

Hello!

Scout club on Gordon rd might be an option.

Lots of people rate tennis and football at albert rec, as others have said...

I think there are a few things on at Cufos, top of the avenue including drama I think.

I hear swimming lessons at arnos pool are OK but we haven't used them and 184 bus stops right outside.

Thanks all for your help.
The girls start at Bowes next week, and have started swimming lessons at Arnos Grove too. Both being nearest options to us, as we live near Broomfield Park.... Just need to get them either a dance class or brownies and they'll be content!!
