Piccadilly line Night Tube to launch after weeks of chaos for commuters
The crisis-hit Piccadilly Line will launch its Night Tube service after weeks of chaos and crippling delays. SEE STORY
The Tube line is the fifth to launch its round-the-clock service, following the Central, Victoria, Jubilee and Northern Lines which have all become 24-hour since August.
Transport for London told the Standard on Friday the line was ready to go, despite being hit with weeks of chaos for passengers after half the trains were taken out of service for emergency repairs.
Rail union bosses had called for the launch to be delayed because of the safety concerns which arose when bad weather and fallen leaves damaged the run-down train wheels.
But Transport for London said 70 of the fleet’s 79 trains – nearly 89 per cent - are now back on the tracks after engineers worked round the clock to repair the unsafe wheels.
Just 25 trains are needed to run the reduced service on the Piccadilly Line – which is the fourth busiest London Underground line in daytime.
A spokesman for TfL told the Standard on Friday: “There’s just minor delays now on morning peak, which is a significant improvement.
“As of this morning we have 70 out of 79 trains on the line. So from our perspective we are ready.
“There’s no safety issues and that’s the number one priority.”
The Night Tube service will run every 10 minutes between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5 – except Terminal 4 – on Fridays and Saturdays.

The supplementary bus service on the Piccadilly Line branch between Acton town and Rayners Lane is reported to have continued to the end of service on Friday 16th December
Whilst delays on the Piccadilly Line services to Heathrow Airport are no longer obvious, enthusiasts are reporting that there remains some remedial rpairs required. _________________________________________________________________________________________

John Sills posted: “So I'm on the @piccadillyline night tube, first night. Excellent. Except some bloke has just thrown up!”
Cecilie Ingwersen tweeted: “Hello #nighttube you gorgeous thing!”
While another woman added: “Night tube on the @piccadillyline - absolute game changer.”
However, not everyone was impressed as some complained of delays and a lack of communication.
Monika Jurkiewicz tweeted: “Night tube on Piccadilly line is a joke! Stuck for 40mins in the tunnel with no information! If you can't get it right, don't do it!
While Calvin McDonald wrote: “First night tube on the Piccadilly Line. 15 minute wait at Holborn. Would have been quicker getting the bus!”
A Transport for London spokesman said no major disruption affected the launch but a signal fault at King’s Cross briefly halted trains for around 10 minutes shortly before 4am.
