Hi neighbours

Wouldn't it be great to get a Sunday market going on Myddleton Road. Has anyone ever explored this idea?

I was just reading the paper today and saw a story about a group who regenerate old arcades such as Granville Arcade in Brixton, filling empty units with independent retailers and creative spaces. I thought.. how could some of that spirit be transferred to Myddleton road..? I know there are lots of discussions about how it could be regenerated. Thankfully The Step is coming, which will hopefully kick start something, but also it got my mind thinking - a market would bring people to the area, you wouldn't have to deal with property / council / long lost owners issue of empty shops (although obviously it would be great to have them used in better ways eventually), and it would provide a place for local retailers to sell interesting stuff that you don't find in Wood Green!

My brother lives in Clapton and there are a couple of Sunday Markets. Chatsworth Road has become much more interesting with new independent shops. I dont see why Myddleton Road couldn't go the same way.

Lucy.

Thank you Richard!

Hi Lucy, I'm really sorry but I'm stuck in bed with a heavy cold so I can't make it tonight after all. Hope the meeting goes well and look forward to hearing what transpires.

HI Kari

No probs. Was good to meet up this evening. Can you send me your email address and I'll keep you in the loop.

Thanks and feel better!

hi any more news on a sunday market on Myddleton road. It's a brilliant idea look at how Broadway market and columbia road have regenerated those streets and areas, people come from miles around. I think its something really worth investing in.

Hi,

I was speaking to a friend about this today, a Sunday street market would be a fantastic idea.    I have only just joined, therefore I missed the recent meeting.  Please can I be kept in the loop.

Thanks!

A public meeting to discuss progress on the Street Market idea has been organised for April 14th

Hi I joined this site because I heard about the public meeting for a market on Myddleton Road - I saw it on the Step webpage (love The Step!).

I'm an occasional market trader living in Bounds Green. I can't make the meeting (I'm selling at the new Muswell Hill market in O'Neills pub that day). So I thought I'd introduce myself here, give you my thoughts, and ask that you keep me informed.

I sell vintage clothing, homewares and collectables. I usually sell at specialist vintage and craft fairs. I know quite a few traders selling vintage and craft, and I know the people who run the vintage / craft fairs in the Boogaloo in Highgate every Sunday, and the guys who do the Friday evening Barboot in Crouch End. Not sure if that's the kind of market you are thinking of, or more general goods, or a farmers market type of thing. Or a combination of course.

It would be good to find out what kind of market local people want, and are likely to come to, and spend at. Do they want to buy unique gifts and crafts, or do they want vegetables and household goods? Do they want unusual handmade/organic/collectable goods, or a cheap and cheerful market that you could do some of your basic shopping at?

As a seller, I just want to point out how vital it is to the success of the market that the sellers do well - otherwise they won't keep coming back. And that needs footfall. The successful markets I trade at either have lots of passing trade and/or do lots of publicity to make sure that people come. I don't think passing trade in Myddleton Road is going to be huge, so there needs to be a big publicity drive to make it work. Especially at the beginning. And it needs the right kind of buyers for the stall holders, people who are going to spend on what's being sold.

I wonder if it might be best to start monthly, rather than weekly, say a certain Sunday of every month, to concentrate the interest. Then increase it if there's enough people coming. Just a thought.

So that's my perspective and I hope it's useful. I look forward to hearing the outcomes of the meeting.

Thanks Ruth, its brilliant to hear from a local, experienced trader to give the trader's perspective. It would be great if you could stay in the loop with all the chatter here. I agree that we would have to find out what residents would like from their market - there's no point selling stuff no one is going to touch, I think its imperative to do some sort of online / community survey. And also VITAL that we do a massive publicity drive on it (even if its a small set up initially) for the first and subsequent markets, if we get the go ahead. Flyers, local paper, local radio, posters, web postings, website, facebook page, its all doable... In my mind I was thinking a mix of stalls would be good, not too organic/vintage/pricey as this will alienate lots of residents. You're right about footfall, especially if it does happen on a Sunday. So far all feedback has been positive, so hopefully the council will also be helpful and allow us a trial market followed by monthly if poss. More local support, the better! Thanks.

I'd be glad to stay in the loop - I'm sorry to miss the meeting. I think it's a great idea, and if I have the time would like to be involved.

A great idea that would bring people back to the area and focus on Myddleton Road as the centre of the community.  It could be a craft market as well, I noticed someone mentioned contacting The Chocolate Factory for some help

Hi Everybody,

I've put together a simple online survey to start capturing some feedback regarding the market idea. Would you mind clicking through the link and take 5 mins to fill it in? Feel free to pass on as the more the better!

Hope to see some of you on the 14th.
