I have lived in bounds green for a few years and have always thought that alot of the shops, retail outlets do not reflect what people who live here need or want.
I know so many people who go to muswell hill or crouch end, but who would love to have something locally. Bounds green has no decent cafe, or coffee shops.
I appreciate that a lot of people use the grocers around the station etc, but do we need the bookies and all the fast food outlets?
Bounds green has an amazing community atmosphere, it is a great residential area to live in, but we really need some more decent amenities.
I know The Step in myddleton road is great and the residents association in that area are working so hard to reclaim that street and bring it back to its former glory, they should be very proud of themselves.

Could this enthusiasm continue further up the road to address the retails outlets surrounding the station? Could we ever have a retail area that looked something like cannon hill, which also has a limited amount of retail space but uses it so well?

Is there anyone who would open a decent cafe/coffee shop?

Around the station is just so grubby, and could do with a facelift or tidy up. This area really lets bounds green down. There are so many fast food outlets, I can't understand how they all keep going or turn a profit. As there is limited commercial space surely the types of businesses should be more diverse.

I love living in bounds green, our streets are great, neighbours amazing and a great sense of community, but what's on offer needs to be addressed. We are constantly encouraged to shop locally, help small businesses etc, but instead we go to muswell hill or crouch end to get a coffee or sandwich.

Has anyone ever tried to open a different business around the station?

Have had a takeaway coffee from the new cafe, the coffee is good.

They have classical music at wood green tube as it has been identified as a crime hotspot/aggressive place and so music was considered as a way to reduce this.

From a local business-owners point of view we would obviously really encourage you to shop locally and take the short walk from Bounds Green tube to Myddleton Road or to any other new quality business that opens.

The more people who shop locally helps the business that are already here trying to make a difference. Afterall, success breeds success and other businesses will recognise that it is worth taking the plunge and opening in the Bowes & Bounds area.

What's on offer is commercially driven and the reality is if everyone wants better businesses to open then they need to support the ones that are here already. There is lots more choice in Muswell Hill and Crouch End and it will remain that way unless other businesses open here because they see a commercial opportunity.

Nell -

I totally agree, every purchaser can use the the power of the pound in their pocket to choose to support local businesses and encourage the sort of retail environment we want to see  locally. That's why this website will continue to support initiatives like Shop Local Saturday happening this weekend, Dec 7th and our Cashmobs last year.

Thanks Richard. We love Bowes & Bounds - it's made a big difference to our business and it's fantastic to see more and more members joining.

I do agree with you both, we should be supporting our local businesses, but I did not realise how little was on offer until a few weeks ago when on a rare day off my husband and I decided to walk around bounds green, and head to myddleton road for some lunch. We went to the the step, and saw that the opening time was 6pm, so we looked around for alternatives, the Springfield was undergoing work, the options around the tube station were chicken, kebabs or burgers and eventually ended back at the ranelagh.

I would love to see myddleton road restored, and have more on offer, we would definitely walk down and support each business as much as we could, but I would also like to see or know if the shops around the station interest anyone? Could they be tidied up a bit, and in turn this area would also promote myddleton road, and encourage anyone arriving via tube to head own to myddleton road. It would be amazing if the whole area became a local shopping destination like crouch end or muswell.

There was a more interesting coffee shop by the tube but that seems to have gone - not sure what it has been replaced by.  However the fruit and veg available near the tube is great

Couldn't agree more Nuala! Thanks for trying us first too. We're open during the day Fri-Sun from 10am.

From a personal point of view, I'd love it if there were more places to go out in our area. We've found Myddleton Road lovely place to trade and I'm sure other businesses would too. The area around the tube is crying out for investment too, which will probably need to be commercial investment as council funding is unlikely... but never say never I guess!

Some good news, I hope! I was talking to one of the mums at the local school, and she said she has been trying for a year to secure the lease on the kebab shop beside the cab station in bounds green. She is hoping to turn it into a bakery, deli and coffee shop! So fingers crossed. I completely agree with Nell, that success breeds success, and once a few nice places open, like the step etc, that this will encourage further businesses to take the plunge in our area. Securing commercial property appears to be a major obstacle.

I have also just became aware that the beautiful building in bounds green, known as forrester house is being renovated into an 'Apart - hotel' so will have 27 studio rooms, and a reception area. No amenities on site. Hopefully this will actually be what is supposed to be and not bedsits, but if this is to become an apart hotel then hopefully this means more customers for the local businesses. Again fingers crossed
Hi Tom,

Forrester house is on bounds green rd, beautiful building. http://www.minutes.haringey.gov.uk/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=28784

This link brings you to the planning and proposals.

The cafe next to WB was just not ran properly, I waited 20 mins one afternoon for a takeaway coffee and eventually had to leave without.
Always have a great coffee at Mums. Great to pop in for a quick drink or take out. Closed Mondays but open during the day for rest of the week.
Hiya Tom, it's on Myddleton Road web address here: http://www.mumslounge.co.uk/
