Traditional New Years Resolutions tend to quite personal: Take more exercise; Learn a language, Find a new job... So it was serendipitous to find two separate links to an article about New Years Resolutions which aim to improve our neighbourhoods.

The article from US based environmental website Grist.org entitled Seven New Year's resolutions to make your neighborhood a better place was mentioned in a comment by Liz Wright on our New Year message - and a link was also tweeted by Liz Ixer to her lovely piece on Harringay Online.

With Liz's permission I have adapted the article to make it relevant to the Bowes and Bounds area:

These are the seven things that the article suggests with some local ideas

  1. Plant something - if you live in a home without a garden, you could get involved with the project to grow herbs at Bowes Park Station. The Community Gardens in Myddleton Road and Finsbury Gardens always need helpers to keep them looking good.
  2. Pick up litter - A regular bugbear and an issue that has featured in our recent discussions about Myddleton Road. It's a simple thing to pick up litter and makes an immediate impact.
  3. Get to know your neighbours - our events listings detail activities happening in the area where you can meet others, such as the Bowes Park Community Association Quiz Night. You could join the Bowes Park Community Choir  come along to the Folk Club or join the Freelance Fridays at the Step.
  4. Find out who your government/local representatives are -our local democracy pages list our elected  representatives The local council elections are coming up in spring. (If you are standing as candidate please let us know).
  5. If you see something, say something - Both Haringey Council  and Enfield Council have webpages which make it easy to report concerns to the council. Or try Fix My Street - which takes reports from any area.
  6. Shop locally - and eat locally too. There's lots of chat on the site about good places to eat, drink and shop and our recommended trades page helps find local businesses
  7. Go for a walk - Join the Bowes Park Walking Group  - or just stroll along the New River or the Community Gardens - take a camera so you can add pictures to our Bowes and Bounds Flickr Group.

I have noticed the increasingly poor state of some of the front gardens in Brownlow Road and found this link in Enfield council...

Has anyone else been in contact with council about this?
