Who are the best selling music artists from each London borough?

This fascinating map makes interesting reading.

On the website Reddit an author who uses the name wittybrits researched London's best selling music acts and mapped them into their borough of origin. Locally we have Amy Winehouse from Southgate representing Enfield and, of course those Muswell Hillbillies - the Kinks representing Haringey.

This is intended as an indicative map not the scientific and evaluated final word - so no doubt there are some talking points and questions about which London bands are missing (The Clash for example).

Love the map, but! Led Zep from Bexley?! John Paul Jones was born in Sidcup but Jimmy Page was from SW London & Robert Plant & John Bonham were Midlanders. Surely Kate Bush (Bexleyheath) would be a better pick?

Good point about Led Zep, I agree - although they do have a Wood Green Connection!

I'm also not sure about the Islington provenance of Coldplay- who have Scottish and Devonian roots (to be frank I'm not sure about Coldplay!) However who would replace them from Islington? Lilly Allen? Spandau Ballet?

....It's entirely the point of these things - to create debate!

... And Siouxsie and the Banshees were part of the Bromley Contingent, not from Southwark. When growing up just down the road from Bromley, they were one of the few things to stop me being embarrassed of being from such a dull place.

Spandau Ballet love waxing lyrical about their Islington roots.

John Lydon grew up in Islington and the first Sex Pistols gig was in the Screen on the Green - so they get my vote.

And Camden... Rod Stewart?... Not Madness?

His borough is Haringey, just before the Barnet border.

Indeed! Apparently Rod Stewart was born on Archway Rd, only just inside the Camden border, went to school in Hornsey & lives between LA & Essex. Madness just are Camden. I'm pretty sure Suggs still lives near Chalk Farm.

As for Coldplay & Islington, the guitarist came from there, but most people think of Chris Martin when they think of Coldplay, surely?

I watched a documentary on Rod Stewart's early life which went to his old house/father's shop and it looked very much like the stretch of Archway Road just opposite the tube station, heading towards East Finchley. That'd be Haringey, almost Barnet.

Also, Newham, Linda Lewis? Small Faces would make more sense (Stevie Marriott was from Manor Park & Ronnie Lane grew up in Forest Gate). As for Redbridge surely Sleeper sold more records than Kathy Kirby?!
