As William Shakespeare reminds us in Sonnet XVIII "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May..."  Well, we are now one day into June, and while it was a little bit blustery  ... one unexpected gust of wind was strong enough to bring down a tree in Melbourne Avenue.

Thankfully there were no injuries or any structural damage - just a snapped telephone cable - and tree surgeons were on site within the hour to clear the debris.

Chatting with a longtime resident and neighbour Tony, he mentioned that the tree in question was one of the oldest in the street - and one that had survived the "Great Storm" of 1987 which saw a number of trees brought down by the extraordinary winds on the night of October 16th-17th 1987. Tony has some remarkable photographs taken at the time around Melbourne Avenue and Palmerston Road ... which are reproduced below, or available via this link.
