I discovered a new website this week detailing London Film Locations.

In advance of Location London, a film studies conference happening in March, a new blog London Streets on Film, is detailing one London Film location each day - you can explore the locations on a map.

This week Wood Green High Road featured - The Fishmongers Arms (which we have written about before) was one location in The Long Good Friday (1980) The exterior of the pub - then known as "Fagans" served as a Belfast pub within the story - interior shots purporting to be the same pub were filmed further down Green Lanes in the Salisbury in Harringay.

Several other local areas have been locations for feature films - perhaps most famously Palmers Green High Street was used to film part of the Knight Bus sequence in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The sight of a bright purple triple decker bus trundling up Green Lanes is something you don't see every day.

Not quite feature Film - but one episode of Dr Who was set and filmed around Alexandra Palace linking the first major UK TV event - the Coronation of QEII -with the Ally Pally TV studios and broadcast mast.

London filmmaker Mike Leigh lived in Earlham Grove - alongside Woodside Park for many years - so it's no surprise that several of his films about surburban London included local locations.

In "Secrets And Lies" for example the character played by Timothy Spall lived in Hampden Way Southgate and ran his own photographic studio on The Green, Winchmore Hill - this was a genuine studio re-used as a location for the film (more info here).

Muswell Hill (and Crouch End) was of course the location for Simon Pegg's film "Shaun of the Dead" but he wasn't the first to film on the streets of Muswell Hill. In fact exterior film locations in our part of London have been used for almost as long as there has been moving film!  Robert W Paul was a pioneer of British Cinema who shot several street scenes around Muswell Hill.

The video Below "An Extraordinary Cab Accident" was filmed in 1903 just off Colney Hatch Lane on the north corner of Newton Avenue and Pembroke Road.
