A new artwork by graffiti artist Banksy appeared overnight on May 13/14 2012.
It is on the wall of the PoundLand shop on the corner of Wood Green High Road and Whymark Avenue at the Turnpike Lane end of the High Road.
The artwork depicts a young boy - Asian in appearance - barefoot and hunched over a sewing machine. A small pipe on the wall is used to attach a string of cheap plastic Union Flag bunting.

The Bunting was earlier fixed along the wall - but has become detached.

Looks like a comment on the upcoming Jubilee celebrations, maybe a reference to the London 2012 Olympics. Its siting on the wall of Poundland in Wood Green High Street may have a resonance with the street disturbances and looting of last summer?

What do you think of the work?

I think I said in an earlier post how some friends of mine from Levene's solicitors in Wood Green went down and had their photos taken with the Banksy artwork - they were so thrilled about it.    This lunchtime my friend Toni, from Levene's went down to have a look at the rendering and empty space and was pleased to see the  new graffiti.   She sent this e-mail later on:

Whilst I was looking at it a group of journalist approached me. They were from German Live TV Network.  They asked me if I would be prepared to talk about how I felt about Banksy’s Stencil being taken off the Wall.  I explained to them that when it first appeared on the Wall on Pound Land how myself and my friends were all amazed that Banksy had come to Wood Green which is not normally known for artist works.   I told them that we had all be so happy that we now had a Banksy for everyone in Wood Green to see etc.,

I explained to them when we found out that it had been taken away how upset and angry we all were etc.,  They said that they could not believe it was up  for auction in America.  I told them about the auctioneers website etc., all the stuff you told me etc.,  So now this will appear in the German Live TV tonight.  I forgot to ask what network they were from which I wish I had never mind.  But lets hope it has done some good anyway.

It's great how this is snowballing - even though it will probably be in vain....

RADIO 4 AT 7.15 - MARK LAWSON TALKS ABOUT THEFT OF BANKSY.

Wow! Thanks for the alert! Just caught the tail-end of that, was Clare Kober interviewed?  Glad it might not get the full price because of a 'legal question' hanging over it, but missed what that was exactly...

Leader of Haringey Council was on (is that Clare Kober - I didn't pay attention to the name)  - she was really good and got across what pride we felt in the art work and how appreciated it was in so many ways.  Yes - let's hope they don't get what they want for it.  It's sad isn't it.

Maybe we could put up a memorial plaque on the wall to shame the guy...

I am sure that tonight's Front Row will be on iplayer soon for anyone who missed this.

I may well be missing something here, but how did they get the piece out of the country and in to the US ? Isn't an export license needed or something ?

Who 'owns' such a piece of art which was freely given by the artist... Surely lots of implications here including one about export license. It's amazing how quick it was gone and up for sale.... Lots of publicity though so thanks to you all for talking to German TV stations and the like. Well done!

ITV report there's a new Banksy in its place - has anyone been down to look today?

Should we be getting on to the Council or someone to slap a preservation order on it asap!

The owner should be wary - there are quite a few Banksy impersonators who pull off a good rat!

Oh look - they're perspexing it already

I don't think I can cope with all this excitement....I need to lie down...

Just heard on the World Service that the Banksy has been withdrawn from the auction sale due to pressure from Haringey Council!   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21562042
