Give or Take Event - Saturday 30th October, Commerce Road Community Centre

The Bowes Park Community Association are holding a Give or Take event on Saturday 30th October at Commerce Road Community Centre.

Give or Take events provide an opportunity to pass on any household items that you no longer require, and also to perhaps find something that you do, all for free!  The concept helps to prevent waste by allowing items to be reused within your local community, and also perhaps save money too!  The event is entirely run by volunteers with support from LB Haringey, and will run between 11am and 2pm.  Items that can be accepted include books, clothes, toys, and household items.  All electrical appliances will be safety inspected on the day.  We can only accept items that are suitable for reuse, so please no dirty or broken items, or large items of furniture.  Where possible, any leftover items will be taken to local charity shops and the Reuse and Recycling Centre for reuse.

This event is entirely run by volunteers and we are always grateful for any further assistance.  Tasks include setting up the hall, logging and distributing items during the event, and transporting leftover items to charity shops and the Reuse and Recycling Centre.  If you would like to be involved, please contact Adam on 07841 457243.

If you are unable to make the event, there are a number of organisations and charities that can accept items for reuse and recycling:

* ReStore Community Projects - http://www.restorecommunityprojects.org/

ReStore collect and redistribute reusable household furniture and appliances from householders and pass them on to individuals and families on low incomes.  Haringey residents should contact the council on 020 8885 7700, and Enfield residents 020 8379 1000 to arrange a collection.  Their warehouse is based in Tottenham Hale.

* Forest Recycling Project - http://www.frponline.org.uk/

Forest Recycling Project run a community repaint scheme in North East London that reuses domestic paint for community benefit.  Reuse paint is also available at low cost from their shop in Walthamstow.

Freecycle is an online forum that allows users to pass on items they no longer need to other individuals for free.

Dear All,

Just a quick reminder that the Bowes Park Community Association are holding a Give or Take event tomorrow (Saturday 30th October) at Commerce Road Community Centre.

Items that can be accepted include books, clothes, toys, and household items. All electrical appliances will be safety inspected on the day.

We can only accept items that are suitable for reuse, so please no dirty or broken items, or large items of furniture.

We are still interested in anyone would like to volunteer at tomorrow's event, and would be especially grateful for any assistance from individuals with access to a car to help transport leftover items to charity shops and the reuse centre. If you would like to be involved, please contact Adam on 07841 457243.

Many thanks,
Adam
This was a fun event - here is a short video of Lionel Ferer describing the Give or Take Day. Check out the events section for details of future Give or Take days.

Dear All,

Many thanks to all those who came along, on Saturday to the Give or Take event and especially to all of the volunteers who made the event possible.

For those of you with a keen interest in reuse and recycling, the next Sustainable Haringey Skillshare has this as its central theme. See below for further details, it takes place this Sunday between 2pm and 4:30pm at Tottenham Chances and includes activities for all the family!

Sustottenham and Sustainable Haringey

Down with Waste

Sustottenham and Sustainable Haringey are together organising a “Skill Share Extravaganza” on Sunday 7th November. This will bring together people from across the borough to share ideas about “re-using, repairing and recycling”. It is open to everyone and about 200 people are expected at the event. There will be workshops, displays and presentations including:

* Fashion show of second hand clothes
* Children’s workshop on recycled art
* Quiz on what does and doesn’t go into council recycling green box
* Knitting demonstration using yarn made from plastic bags
* Workshop on how to build a pirate ship from a plastic milk bottle
* Lessons on how to make clothing items out of old jeans
* Display of bookmaking re-using A4 paper
* Children’s workshop making drums from recycled materials with drumming sessions at the end.
* Displays of furniture and art made from recycled products
* Presentation on “cutting waste, cutting carbon and creating jobs”
* Hands on demonstration showing how to make models out of rubbish by 8 year old Josie Smith
* Film about Material Resource Facility (where the green box items are sorted)
* Trouble shooting workshop for computers and electronic equipment
* Treasure basket for babies and toddlers

Wendy Keenan, of SusTottenham, a group based in south Tottenham , said

“What we do today affects the future and maybe the very survival of our society. Environmental crises, especially global climate change, are caused by modern industrial practices and lifestyles reliant on non-renewable and polluting fossil fuels. But we can all do something about it! This is the fourth Skill Share event we have organised. We hope that it will be educational, inspirational and also good fun.”

The event will be held between 2pm and 4.30pm at Tottenham Chances, 399 High Road (opposite police station). During the morning the Sustainable Haringey Network will hold its quarterly gathering at the same venue when groups from all parts of the borough will talk about their activities. This will be followed by lunch provided by volunteers. The meal will include some “skipped” food (food thrown out by food shops because it is past its “sell by” date but still perfectly good).
