Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if any cat owners can recommend a really good vet for cats in the area? My cat has been diagnosed with a kidney condition, and I am currently registered at Village Vet's in Southgate (who are fine but expensive), but I really am looking for a vet with cat expertise (the vets I have found tend to be dog experts, and nothing against dogs, but cat's are different) who will also take that little bit of time to help explain things?  I don't want to say anything against Village Vet at all, but I wondered if there was a non-chain vet that will go that extra mile for your cat?   I was googling and wondered about Hill's Vet in Crouch End that has people raving about it - have any cat owners been there?  Are there any others that people would recommend?

Many thanks - Anna (and Parsley the cat!).

I would highly recommend James Staton - 399 High Road, Wood Green - 02088884523.   He is an independent vet who has been there for many years.   He can be a bit grumpy so be prepared for that but he has been great with our cat and his fees are reasonable.  In fact we have met people in the waiting room who have come great distances to see him.

I absolutely agree!

Thank you very much - that's really helpful. I'll check him out.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. Used to go there, then had an awful experience with the way he handled my cat, didn't seem to care.  Stopped going there and now go to Alexandra Park Road Vet, which is brilliant

I've been in the area for over 30 years and, being a cat lover,  have tried most of the vets!  I agree that James Staton is very grumpy but an excellent vet;  lots of my neighbours take their cats there.   He's very pragmatic and never tries to keep a cat alive when they shouldn't be.

I think Village Vets at Southgate are expensive and not as a good as they used to be.   I left after they tried to persuade me to give an elderly cat chemotherapy which I totally disagreed with.

I wonder what's putting you off 'chain' vets?   I go to the Medivet at Muswell Hill (Colney Hatch Lane), and I find them knowledgeable,  reasonable in comparison to Village Vets and the main vet is very experienced with cats.  Even though it's a chain, this one has a small practice feel and the vet assistants are lovely.

Lots of luck!
Joanna

I also recommend Staton in High Road Wood Green. He is grumpy in fact can be downright rude but he is an excellent vet and reasonably priced .

I think I would be grumpy if i were still working at 80

hi Anna

I will ask my neighbour who knows quite a bit about cat vets. Although we live in Harringay, she will travel to get the best/best value for her cats I know.

hope you and Parsley are otherwise ok!

My vote goes to Mr Staton too - he's an excellent vet. He can be a bit grumpy with humans but is marvellous with animals. He was great with our two old cats, one of whom had diabetes, and gave very good advice. Since their demise we now have two young cats, and we got Tilly the female from Mr Staton - she was a stray he had taken in. His partner, Marion, runs a rescue centre for all sorts of animals so between the two of them they do a lot of good work. And he's always really pleased to see Tilly - she stops him being grumpy right away!

Hi Anne,

We've been taking our cats to Mrs Hill at Hill's Vets in Park Road Crouch End for over 20 years. She is brilliant with cats and people always taking time to explain the rationale for proposed treatment. Our cat Jed is 19 and she's taking a sensible pragmatic approach to his care. Her team are very good too. 0208 3405453  178 Park Rd Crouch End London N8 8JT. I hope you find the right vet for Parsley, best wishes Theresa Beattie

Ditto all the above about Mr Staton

brilliant vet , although getting on in years.............loves animals.....but not to fond of humans

Mr Staton has been my vet now for over 20 years and has looked after my menagerie of dogs, cats, birds and fish, fabulous vet, as people say his bedside manner with humans can be brusk, but his care and commitment to animals shines through!
