It has been announced by NHS Trusts in England that deficits have totalled £930million in the first three months of this financial year. It has been described as the worst financial position the National Health Service has been in for a generation, according to regulators.

Richard Murray, Director of Policy at health research body The Kings Fund, said:

“Either substantially more money is going to have to be found for the NHS, and this year, or these organisations are going to be asked to reduce their deficit and that’s going to be very very difficult in terms of waiting times, in terms of A&E and performance.”

The deficit is already more than that for the whole of the previous financial year. An immediate antidote is needed and recent declarations by the Conservative government that it will invest £10billion into the future of the NHS may not matter because it may be to late to save the health service if these losses continue at such an alarming rate.

Richard Murray went on to explain: “The £10 billion is for 2020, the £930 million these organisations are short this year is right now. I don’t think there is any doubt the government will continue to pay doctors and nurses , of course they will.

“But it does mean it is a very difficult situation that someone’s going to have to go to the chancellor and say the health service has overspent, of the health service is so big, when it overspends it is quite a big number.”

These alarming NHS deficit figures may scare the population, who still believe that health care should be free for all. Are we beginning to see the doors opening for privatisation?
