Hi there, It's our first winter in our house in Bowes Park and we have a wooden framed conservatory/lean to that clearly isn't up to the job. Has anyone got any tips on local suppliers who could supply and fit new windows, doors and ceiling at a reasonable rate? Thanks, Lizzie.

Hello Lizzie

We used Barnet Windows a couple of years ago to fit French doors and they did a great job at a good price. The doors were upvc though so don't know if they do wooden frames.

All the best

Hi there - we're having to replace all our wooden sash windows as we're freezing too! We are of course replacing them with tradional style wood due to wanting to keep up the Victorian style of the property, the fact that good wooden ones will last 100 years (UPVC I'm told last 15 which I found shocking!) and the fact that we are in a conservation area. Be really careful to check if you are.  We have applied for planning permission to do this work and are waiting on the outcome, so it's worth checking if you need it.  I have had a number of companies round and have chosen a company based on their work in the area.  The work however hasn't been completed yet, so message me if you want the details as I'm cautious to reccommend until they've done the job for me.

Hi Emmeline, thanks for this. Yes the rest of the house still has its original sash windows (in various states of repair) and when it comes to replacing those we'll be looking to do the same as you - although there are a mixture of UPVC and wooden windows up and down our street so not a requirement to do so. However, I have now had one (painful) quote for sorting out our conservatory with UPVC or similar and still considering what do on that front. I will drop you a line if I need the details of your company and to see if you're happy with the work. Thanks! Lizzie.

Hiya - yes it's really strange.  You need planning permission, yet some people put in the plastic ones.  I do think it's a real shame though to put the UPVC ones in - I have no idea how the planning allows them when they look completely out of keeping?  I suspect some people don't have planning permission.  Anyway, I will keep you posted on our project.  Good luck with yours. :-)
