Anyone know of a local place where you can dispose of white spirit?

I tried Barrowell Green Waste Site but they don't have the facility there.

How much white spirit are you talking about?

Are you aware that if its contaminated with paint, all you have to do is put the closed container somewhere it won't be disturbed for a few days, and the paint pigment will all settle out, leaving clear white spirit which can be repeatedly reused.

Thanks for your response Dave. There's about 500mls. It's already been well re-used and no longer settles to give a useful liquid, i.e. it's pretty murky and no longer cleans well.

OK, so its got lots of paint oily residue in it. Easiest thing (for a relatively small quantity like that) is to put it somewhere safe, well-ventilated/outdoor, in a fairly wide-mouthed open container (eg jamjar) with an open cap and allow it to evaporate to atmosphere. What's left will solidify and can be disposed of as solid waste.

Thanks again Dave - I live in an upstairs flat, but I guess I could try that on my balcony!

If you're left with oily material that isn't drying, you could add some absorbent material to it, such as sand or cat litter, before disposal. If you're letting it evaporate off, the main thing is that it needs to be well-ventilated and not a living space where you or others would be exposed to fumes in a confined space.

More wise words : ) Yes, I decided I'll probably have to do leave it until I no longer want to keep the balcony door open because of the heat....
