During April and May John Hinshelwood and Janet Owen (both local authors) are conducting Seminars at The Old Schoolhouse exploring different aspects of the education of Hornsey children through the ages. The seminars will place education for children from Hornsey in the context of provision in London and Middlesex from the mediaeval period until the formation of the London Borough of Haringey.
The first seminar covers schooling to the 17th century and the schools available to children of the parish of Hornsey. The next session explores the development and practice of schooling in the parish with regard to particular schools. The increasing involvement of the State and its impact on Hornsey schools is the subject of the third session; and the reasons for the 1870 Education Act and the formation of the Hornsey School Board the subject of seminar four. The penultimate session looks at early twentieth-century local education authority provision of secondary schooling. The course concludes with the emergence of a comprehensive system of schooling for all children as part of the welfare state.
