This week was World Book Day - (and World Book Night!) - and this week also saw our local independent booksellers in Wood Green the Big Green Bookshop making the news in the Times and the Guardian with an appeal to readers to buy an extra book to help them pay off a major loan they needed to set-up the shop and buy stock.

They wrote:

It’s the 3rd Anniversary of the Bookshop on March 8th. During the week 6th to 12th March we’re asking you all to buy just one extra book from the Big Green Bookshop. We have over 1,000 people on our loyalty card scheme & many of you who are reading this who aren’t. If each of you bought one extra book this would pretty much guarantee our survival.

The story of how Tim and Simon set up as independent booksellers after the closure of the large Waterstones in Wood Green is well documented on their blog "Open a Bookshop- What could possibly go wrong?" But the Big Green Bookshop is so much more than another Wood Green retailer - they have author signings, Quiz nights, a Knitting Group and Sunday afternoon board games sessions... as well as kids storytelling  and poetry readings. If you havent been you should go - its a lovely place... and if you have been you should go back - this week ... and buy a book or two.

Big Green Bookshop is a great local bookshop and a brilliant resource in our community - let's support it to ensure it stays around.

Thanks for this! I do go in there sometimes but will definitely make an effort to buy a book there this week. It's so easy to just use Amazon, but bookshops are a precious resource, especially for families with children.
