British Gas customers need to pay a standing charge on their gas meter. This was something energy companies introduced with the industry regulator to make energy prices and bills easier to understand. But if you’re not using very much gas you can end up paying more for the standing charge than for your gas.
So we’ve decided to give this back to low gas users who are also in receipt of benefits including Pension Credits, Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), Child Tax Credits, Universal Credit. You may also be eligible if you receive a State Pension and your Gross Annual Household Income (before tax and deductions) is less than £16,190. This isn’t something we’re being told to do by the Government or Ofgem. We’re doing it because we believe it’s the right thing to do.
You will be eligible if you have used less than 1,500 kWh over a 12 month period and are still an active British Gas customer. If you receive the Warm Home Discount, you may receive the £95 rebate automatically. Otherwise, we will write to you about the rebate and invite you to apply.
1,500 kWh is the equivalent of using your gas boiler for approx 15 mins per day every day over a year, this also is dependent on the energy efficiency rating of your boiler.
The rebate scheme for 2015-2016 is now closed.
