Enfield Council announced this week that is has appointed architects to begin design work to finally restore Broomfield House and make it available for public use.

The Greater London Authority is funding the design work and has promised to provide the estimated £5.47m to complete building works.

Cllr Doug Taylor, The Leader of Enfield Council said, "This is an opportunity to finally resolve the problem of Broomfield House. I hope that a consensus can be created for the future restoration of the building.

"The architects will be working with local groups over the next few months to take on board ideas and suggestions as to how the scheme might look, how it can enhance the neighbourhood, and how it can be a welcome source of new homes for older people within the Palmers Green community.

"We will shortly begin to consult with local stakeholders and residents, and I hope people will take the opportunity to make a positive contribution to this important scheme."

Current proposals include the restoration of the interior of Broomfield House plus a new cafe and community space.

Under the conditions of the GLA grant other areas of the House, the stable block and kitchen garden will be converted to homes for local older people.

There is an indication of support with planning and listed building consent applications from English Heritage. Look out for further consultations which will be taking place during Spring of 2011 alongside an exhibition of designs.
