My 11year old son is mad about BMX and skate boarding. He has asked me to ask the local people if they would back him in trying to get a skate park locally. ie: Arnos park

I told him I would try and see what the feeling was! So please let us know

Hi Sally

I would definitely support young people who wanted to set something up locally. A couple of years ago I was part of an awards panel, during the assesment process I visited Skegness on a particularly “bracing” day in December and was inspired by the fantastic X-Site Skatepark. The UK’s only indoor and outdoor purpose built BMX and Skateboard centre is an excellent well-used asset which is contributing to the regeneration of the town by attracting visitors outside the traditional resort summer season.

This impressive project is all the more remarkable given its origins. The project began with local young skaters and BMXers meeting in the back room of a fish and chip shop – wanting to set up somewhere to follow their sport. Because of their energy and knowlege of what would work locally they won a bit of support along the way. The young skaters persevered and many are still involved in the impressive and self sustaning project that now provides several jobs and a lot of fun in an area struggling in a tough economy.

For more details about the Skegness Project follow this link (see page 9) whilst I don't think I am suggesting a huge centre - the principle is the same, young people who live locally are in the best position to say what facilities are needed in their neighbourhoods.

Sally,

there is a skate park in Alexandra Palace if that's close to you (by the pond - http://www.alexandrapalace.com/event-organisers/the-park-activities/). W3 drops you right next to it (or a short but steep walk up from the train station).

Hope of help

john
