As part of the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of World War 1, the Government has set up a programme to honour all recipients of the Victoria Cross during this war. Specially made paving stones are being given to local councils, who are being encouraged to hold events for UK soldiers who were awarded the VC, and who were born within their area. The intention has been to hold each event as close to the birthplace of the recipient as possible, and on or close to the 100th anniversary of the action which resulted in the award being given. There are two VC recipients who will be commemorated soon in the Borough of Enfield. One of these is in the SDCT area, Grove Road, New Southgate, and the other is in Pymmes Park, Edmonton. Captain Allastair McReady-Diarmid, of the Middlesex Regiment, was born in Grove Road in 1888, and was originally named Arthur Malcolm Drew. He was awarded a posthumous VC, following his brave actions on 30th Nov. and 1st Dec. 1917, which resulted in him losing his life. A short commemoration event has been planned for 1st Dec. 2017 at Grove Road, on the restored Open Space, with the assistance of the Trust, which will start at 11am. All being well, attendees will include the Mayor, our MP, various other dignitaries and members of the Middlesex Regiment. We also hope that a descendant of McReady-Diarmid will be able to come. Anyone is welcome to attend, but be aware that parking will be severely restricted, so try to come on public transport, if you can.
