Hi all,

I can see from a couple of other posts people are all too familiar with the issues on this alley way. Yesterday evening I was walking my jack russell and no sooner than I stepped on to the path two children (about 13 and 10 I'm guessing) appeared at the end with two Staffie mixes/pitbulls off the lead.

I immediately decided to leave at the next exit as all four were jumping around and making noise. I made it a few steps before these dogs had sprinted to mine and attacked him. I managed to pull him out and amazingly his injuries were limited to several deep punctures on one leg.

These kids ran over and scrambled around getting the dogs on leads and then walked off (without apologising or asking after my dog I might add - blaming the parents though as kids shouldnt have to deal with this sort of thing)

I got the name of the boy "Daniel" but no other info. I would really like to speak to their parents or have the police do it (they say they will if I find out where they live) otherwise the parents might not ever even know and it could happen again and an even smaller dog could have been much more serisouly injured. Even on the leads the kids were visibly struggling to hold them.

Basically does anyone know a) if they sound familiar or b) who controls the CCTV in that alley? They entered the footpath from the north.

Thank you (and im sorry to join on a sombre note!)

network rail?

Hi, Perhaps it is; I will look into that.

Thanks,

Terrible. As a local dog owner of two, this saddens me. Every staffie/ pit bull cross/ rottie/ mastiff owner knows their dogs frighten people and that they can be unpredictable around people and dogs. They should be on lead on pavements and walked by people who can control them. The new regulations about microchipping would do nothing to help you in this case. The government has not gone far enough. But the trouble is whatever is done, it will penalise responsible owners not these irresponsible ones, as they won't comply. They don't have insurance and are probably on low incomes so you won't be able to claim for injuries incurred. They may get prosecuted if you have enough evidence but the court costs will be more than their fine.

I do think that more should be done to control lawlessness generally on our streets and that there needs to be more police on the beat. There seems to be no police presence on the streets in bounds green any more, for obvious reasons I suppose.

With regard to dogs, I'm lost for an answer. With multiculturalism comes different ideas about how we behave in communities, how we treat each other and attitudes towards animals. I would like to see more dog wardens, not to remove dogs but just to advise owners to get their dogs on a lead or to muzzle, or at least so they get to hear of potentially dangerous dogs before its too late.
Can haringey afford it?
Can they afford not to?

Hi,

Yes I agree with the issues around changing the law.

I love all dogs including staffies etc but the fact is an out of control spaniel is not going to do much damage as an out of control staffie.

In this case I wouldnt be surprised if both dogs were great family pets and the reason this happened is they were being walked by children who instead of creating a calm, in control environment had them in a VERY excited state and they leapt on the first release they found. But that doesnt change the fact they could seriously injure or even kill another dog or worse and that is exactly why I want to make sure their parents are aware.

I am going to try and contact the council about this. I think that lane at least should have a sign telling owners to keep their dogs on leads. It is not the same as a park, you cant give other people and animals a wide berth and most of the footfall is commuters.

It is just a shame that something as pleasant as dog walking has this constant shadow of the irresponsible owner over it.

Anyway - thank you for the reply

So annoying.  I walk my pedigree Staffie whos a real sweetie, but I keep him on a lead, especially when I see a strange dog or children approaching when he's off lead in the park - he's kept on lead on the road. I'm not unsure of him but of how the other dog or the children will react!  But the Council's dog controls are supposed to have come into effect on 1st April: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/environment_and_transport/noise_an... The dogs shouldn't be walked without a lead in any event.  I should image, as someone has posted, that the train company maintain the CCTV, if not them, then definitely Haringey Council: in reference to the new dog controls, they should be contacted in the first instance.  I'm afraid the controls don't say that kids can't walk even powerful dogs on leads, more's the pity.

I'll keep my eyes open for them as I use the path half a dozen times a day.

I suggest you report this to the Safer Neighbourhoods Team tel 020 8721 2679 or 07920 233784  Laura Coates was, I think the Policewoman who was very helpful in a similar case some time ago.  She also seemed to know all the problem dogs and their owners in the area.  But it is really important to report such an attack.  ASBOS for dogs are possible and this was placed on one near Nightingale Gardens and solved the problem.

Good luck - please ring them.
