A report by the brigade’s investigations team warned five years ago that the back insulation panel of a fridge is consumed by fire in just three minutes. It has lobbied for the backs of fridge freezers to be made of fire-retardant material as standard.

The Metropolitan police confirmed last week that the Grenfell Tower blaze started in a Hotpoint FF175BP fridge freezer. The government has ordered testing of the Hotpoint appliance, which was manufactured between 2006 and 2009.

The London Fire Brigade has stated that fridge freezers are “potentially the most dangerous household appliances if they are involved in a fire”.
