The recent sequence of blog posts from Caroline Simpson about clearing the New River Tunnel included information about a fascinating collection of old bottles found in the river:

There is a thriving bottle collecters network - who unearth, clean up and trade the stuff that was discarded by earlier generations.

Here is an image of one old bottle - a "Pumpkin Flask" - branded with the name of The Fishmongers Arms, Wood Green. These bottles were very common in late Victorian period supplied by pubs selling beer and spirits to be taken away and consumed at home.

I am grateful to "Flaskboy" Steve, for permission to reproduce the photograph here.

He has an extensive set of images on the  "London History in a Bottle" collection.

Seems like there is much more to the history of the former Fishmongers Arms pub than Jazz and classic Rock music!
