At the AGM this week the subject of the lack of a good local café came up. The feeling was that the demographic of the area has changed and that we are crying out for such a thing - a friendly place where people could drop in, work (if there was internet access) if they work from home, meet friends, and that would have a good community feeling. A really good example is The Front Room in Tollington Park, in Finsbury Park. It's a friendly, funky place, furnished with quirky bits and pieces, with very much a community feeling - the people who come in know each other! Some people even go there for business meetings. They have tables outside where you can sit in the summer, and it's always busy. If you are around that area, check it out, or go to:
Any suggestions for Bowes Park?

Here's a little snippet of information I stumbled across today - Commercial Property Agency, Copping and Joyce have said their research indicates commercial rents in Wood Green have dropped by about 25% since 2007 (see this tweet )

At least one bright note for anyone planning to set up a local business!

Thanks Richard - that is good news and also worrying at the same time!

I'm going to Drink, Shop & Do on the 18th May anyway Diana and I will try and sound them out after my meeting.

I think we should get together and have a chat though. I can then let you know what we're planning, how we'd like to involve the local community and sound you out about what support / input you would like to have. It would be great to get together at One Two Eight and meet anyone who would like to come along.

Tuesday 31 May looks free in the evening - does that date suit? I'll email Jessica to pencil it in if it does.

Nell

So I presume we're giving up on the 10 or 12 May dates to go and see Drink, Shop & Do, are we? That's a pity. Couldn't we follow up on your email and at least check that they got it since they had agreed to meet us, or ask whether they would be prepared to see us on any other day?

I don't think I will be able to do 31 May as I'm having an eye operation that day.

Anna

It's the first I've heard about Arsenal. It's hardly in the local area, is it? I would still like you (or us) to talk to Drink, Shop & Do.

Thanks Mary-Louise! I hope it's going to be as good Litro too - we'll do our best. Great to have your support and look forward to meeting you on the 31st May.

This discussion has taken a few different directions, so just to back track a bit - it was started by Diana who wanted to get people together to discuss setting up a community cafe, which was mentioned at the last BPCA meeting. Mat and I came into the discussion to let everyone know that we are intending to open a cafe/shop/events space on Myddleton Road and we'd really like community support. We'd love to meet anyone who's interested at OneTwoEight on Tuesday 31st May at 7.30pm to give you a bit more background on who we are and what our plans are, get everyone involved and get things moving.

There is a separate discussion started by Kate Franzman about a Community Arts Centre and I would think that there would be some crossover. It would certainly be great if we could get both projects off the ground!

I'm sure DS&D will have some valuable tips so if Diana and Anna can get some feedback from them all the better and we could use it for our new startup and potentially for Kate's project too.

I hope that makes sense - I almost confused myself there!

Thanks again.

Nell.

Thanks Nel,

Sorry I am away on hols that week but will catch up with you soon and offer all help I can.  Every successful business generates a more interest in other enterprises setting up in the area.  Great stuff!

I can now come to the meeting at 128 on 31st May to discuss Nell and Mat's plan for a cafe/shop/events space.
