Lower benefits cap set to leave thousands of London families worse off

Evening Standard story CLICK HERE

The number of London families affected by Government welfare reforms will more than double, new figures have shown.

reduction to the benefits cap from £26,000 to £23,000 a year, which is introduced today, will hit 19,000 households across the capital compared to 8400 in previous years, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

The new cap will affect more families in London with two or three children as the amount they receive from the state and very high rates of housing benefit could easily hit the cap’s £23k maximum.

Previously in London only families with four or more children were likely to reach the cap.
