A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
Hi All
Having seen Daniel Cowans lovely picture and read Meg Bonds concern about water weed and my heart breaking over the litter and pollution I have a dream. Which is utterly practical.
Myself and a colleague were to book on a fully funded Thames 21 waterways event. It usually costs over £200. The training is to enable one to be qualified as a blue badge waterways organiser.
The dates have been moved to 21 Sept and 28 Sept. I am devastated as both of us are committed to our annual retreat which has an important call to action regarding nature.
So what am I proposing? If anyone out there is available then look at the Pymmes Brookers facebook page. Thames 21 are organising this. It is a waterways event. You just need to book your place. Quick before spaces disappear.
I want to lead river clear ups in Bowes Park but this requires certification (which Thames 21 are providing).
In Bowes Park we have an opportunity. This waterways event is so much more than picking up litter. We have a chance to return this water to a state of health. We have a chance to increase biodiversity. We have a chance to stop the water weed stink at its root cause. We have a chance for a more beautiful space. I want to be part of this. With you.

Hi Ann,
I would love to take the credit for the lovely New River photo mentioned above, but actually it was taken by Ross Goodlass and Claire Cahill of the excellent @myddletonroad instagram account. If anyone else has nice pictures of the local area please let me know and we will see if we can feature them in the weekly Bowes & Bounds Connected email.
Daniel
Thank you for your inspiring vision, Ann. Sadly I can't make either of those training day dates. But I've passed the word around.
The stretch of New River between Whittington Rd and Myddleton Rd is now flourishing, with wildlife and insects returning, including beautiful dragonflies.
The weed seemed to disappear quickly. Do you have any idea how that happened? Did someone come and pull it out?
Our stretch of river north of Whittington Rd is still very weedy with very little wildlife. I'm still ringing Thames Water and having pleasant chats with their call centre people but the mythical Grounds Team have never rung me back as promised.
Any suggestions about what else to do? If we had a working group to pull out the weed, how would we dispose of it?
Regards
Meg
Hi Meg!
Thankyou so much for spreading the river training days word around. Bless you.
I am currently trying to educate myself about river health etc so in truth I have no idea as I have not gone on the training. This week I shall be attending a river litter clean organised by the Pymmes Brookers so will start to get a better idea about what happens and how things are dealt with.
Interesting you say you are north of whittington road. I am on the other bit..the stretch of the New River between Whittington Road and Myddleton Road. I walked up your bit this afternoon and noticed lots of fish in there. So clearly life is still thriving.
If I get any more information on river weed/sewage weed and what the difference and how to deal with it I will let you know. I'm pretty ignorant but interested in learning so we can all help nature out.
Regards
Ann
