A national Accident and Emergency (A&E) survey published by the Care Quality Commission this week shows that across the country 8 out of 10 respondents rate their overall experience of hospital emergency services as good with only 3 per cent of patients saying the doctor or nurse who treated them did not listen to what they had to say.

Sadly our nearest A&E Hospital – The North Middlesex along the North Circular at Edmonton – is rated fourth worst in the country. Respondents rated the “North Mid” worse than average for “waiting time”, “care and treatment”, “hospital environment and facilities”, as well as the “leaving” category.This follows a CQC report last summer which reported that the hospital overall requires improvement.

Amongst other neighbouring A&E units Barnet Hospital, (which has incorporated Chase Farm Hospital A&E), was rated eighth worst in the survey.

The national findings are presented under the questions inspectors ask about A&E departments: are they safe, caring, effective and responsive to people's needs. The survey does not ask questions about whether hospitals are 'well-led'. They reflect solely on the survey findings of the experiences of patients. And of course these findings do not mean that any individual will get a poorer medical attention at the North Middlesex - or that clinical outcomes are worse here than anywhere else.

When it comes down to it, emergency treatment offered by dedicated A&E staff is not something people pick and choose as a consumer choice – so it is vital that the hospital managers and those in charge of the NHS Trust take care to ensure that the provision in the A&E department of the North Middlesex and that of the hospital more generally be improved to reach a standard closer to the national average.

Saddened but not surprised. Despite millions being spent on refurbishment, incompetency continues to reign supreme.

Irena Rybinska may be "saddened but not suprised" but this is the "opinion of patients" based on the following eligibility at the beginning of 2014. 

Eligibility and participation

  • Participants: almost 40,000
  • Response rate: 34 per cent
  • Age range: 16 years and older
  • Time period: January, February or March 2014
  • Eligibility: patients who attended a major A&E department
  • Exclusions: patients that attended a minor injuries unit or walk-in centre, those who visited A&E to obtain contraception or who suffered a miscarriage or another form of abortive pregnancy, and patients with a concealed pregnancy.

Queens Hospital, Romford  =76%

Northwick Park and Ealing = 67.3%

Charing Cross and St Mary's = 75.7%

In comparison:

North Middlesex = 89.1%

Royal Free (incl Barnet) = 94.7%

St Georges Healthcare = 90%
