Now dog owners won't be told if their pet dies on a Highways Agency road?

According to a story in the Daily Mail on 16th February: (on line here)

  • Rule change means roadworkers are not obliged to check dog's identity
  • Owners of a lost or dead dog can be traced by their collar or microchip
  • Petition opposing rule change has already collected 109,000 signatures

Campaigners are opposing a rule change that means dog owners will not be told if their pets are killed on main roads.

But MPs and campaigners, appalled by the heartless policy change, are demanding action to ensure animal-lovers are not needlessly left in the dark when a much-loved pet goes missing.

The origin of the story goes back to August 2014 in a story publish...

Highways Agency’s rules requiring staff to try to find the owners of dead dogs found by the road came into place following another petition launched after a dog called Jester went missing in 2005.

The current response is that:

Due to the nature of the processes already in place, the Government has no plans to enforce adherence to the Network Management Manual through legislation.

This e-petition remains open to signatures until 17th February and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should it pass the 100 000 signature threshold.

TAKE NOTICE : The petition and the Network Management Manual  only applies to Highway Agency Roads shown on the HA Map downloadable here
