"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time", British  Sir Edward Grey Foreign Secretary may have remarked to a friend on the eve of Britain's entry into the First World War. First published in Grey's memoirs in 1925, the statement earned wide attention as a correct perception of the First World War and its geopolitical and cultural consequences.

To mark Peace Weekend and their own 100th Church Anniversary on  Saturday 25th October at 8pm (doors 7.30pm) , Palmers Green United Reformed Church are inviting members of their congregation, their friends and neighbours to a recital of words and music ( involving local musicians) and recalling Palmers Green in 1914 under the title

       Keeping lamps alight

Palmers Green URC's history has its roots in Bowes Park as far back as Saint James's Presbyterian Church, Wood Green's formation in 1875 a.... These two churches combined in 1950 to become United Church of Saint James-at-Bowes. The combined congregations combined with Palmers Green United Reformed Church in Fox Lane N13 in 1975

Entry to the recital will be free but with a retiring collection in aid of Christian Aid.

The venue offers flat floor access and facilities for the disabled; but is limited to on street parking
