Thanks for Fox Lane Residents Association for the source of this information

Our neighbouring Borough, Barnet, suffered a massive 100 residential burglaries last week. The period now leading up to Christmas is obviously a time when burglars are on the lookout for easy pickings.

The following was part of the message issued by Barnet police – the advice obviously applies to all residents.

“Last week Barnet suffered a massive 100 residential burglaries on the Borough , and over the last few weeks we have been hit much harder than anticipated.

During winter, homes are more likely to be targeted by burglars. Sometimes simple steps to secure properties can reduce chances of being a victim.

Crime prevention tips and information can be found via the Bumblebee website;

The Metropolitan Police takes burglary seriously – we are working hard to prevent offences and tackle offenders.

The following five pieces of advice are vital:

– Lock windows and doors when leaving your home

– Keep valuables out of sight and reach

– Register your property on Immobilise.com

Avoid packaging being left outside, which indicate you have expensive new items in your home.

– Lock side gates and store bins behind them.

Other tips are contained in the Palmers Green Safer Neighbourhoods newsletter for November 2015

– Make sure that any valuables are not in sight.

– Put keys out of reach of letterboxes.

– In the evenings, shut curtains and leave some lights on.

– Never leave car documents or ID in obvious places such as kitchens or hallways.

– If you are going to be away for days or weeks at a time, you will need to take additional action. Consider asking your neighbours to close curtains, or park on your drive.

– Use a time device to automatically turn lights and a radio on at night.
