Shadow minister suggests women-only train carriages to cut down on sex assaults

A Labour frontbencher (Chris Williamson MP, Derby North) has said women-only train carriages may be needed to tackle a rise in sex attacks.(Click HERE

Chris Williamson MP (Derby North), who is shadow fire services minister, reignited the debate that was started when Jeremy Corbyn floated the idea in 2015 The Labour leader was criticised at the time but that didn’t stop Mr Williamson from presenting it again.

The Derby North MP retweeted a Skwawkbox website article yesterday that supported the proposal and the told PolticsHome: ‘It would be worth consulting about it. It was pooh-poohed (when Jeremy Corbyn suggested it), but these statistics seem to indicate there is some merit in examining that.

‘Complemented with having more guards on trains, it would be a way of combating these attacks, which have seen a very worrying increase in the past few years.’

He added women would not be forced to use the carriages but would have a ‘safe space’ to go if they wanted.

The services at Derby are generally operated by East Midlands Trains with articulated through corridor Class 153, Class 156 or Class 158 stock. How defies my belief how the MP consider these can be used for women only carriages.

In terms of local services serving Enfield, the new trains promised by both franchises will also using articulated through corridor trains.
