Christ Church Southgate is the venue for a Hustings for the General Election candidates standing in the constituency of Enfield Southgate on Wednedday 22nd at 7:30pm.

The event is organised by "Churches Together in Southgate, Oakwood and Cockfosters" and, like all the events in Christ Church, everyone is welcome to attend.

In advance of the meeting Christ Church have shared an interesting little bit of local political history:

There are a number of politicians linked to our church. This memorial tablet from the time of the Weld Chapel now hangs in the church office. William Cunliffe Shaw was MP for Preston between 1792 and 1796. He was returned unopposed by the 12th Earl of Derby and in 1796 resigned in favour of Derby's own son, having never spoken in the House.

He lived in Southgate House (now part of Southgate College). His daughter Philippa Emma Cunliffe Shawe married Henry Philip Powys (a family memorialised in local street names), who bought Broomfield House from William Tash, whose remains also lie in the Weld Chapel churchyard.
