Following last week’s list of “things you can do on Myddleton Road” I was prompted to include on here another thing you can do on Myddleton Road – support a couple of great charities each making a difference to many peoples lives.

For some years the Leukaemia Cancer Society have been based on Myddleton Road they are dedicated to ensuring that more people with Leukaemia and other blood cancers survive, have the best possible quality of life and that their families and carers get the support they need.

They are well known for expanding the recruitment of volunteer bone marrow donors, and raising funds for research, education and patient care.

LCS were founded in 1994 when leukaemia sufferers John Triteos and Anna Georgiou, who needed bone marrow transplants to save their lives, began making a desperate appeal for bone marrow donors to come forward. Friends and family of the two young people got together and in conjunction with the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust worked very hard in organising clinics to try to enlist more Greek and Cypriot donors in order to find matches for John and Anna.

Since then many donors have come forward and their names have been added to the register. Although many more are needed.

A more recent arrival to Myddleton Road - earlier this year - is the Pro Cancer Research Fund which has recently moved to Bowes Park from Palmers Green.

PCRF aims to raise awareness into Prostate and Breast Cancer and is closely connected with the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (University of London).

The Pioneering research scientist Mustafa Djamgoz, Professor of Cancer Biology, established the charity following the public’s response to an article in The Sunday Times, reporting on his breakthrough research into determining which cancerous cells are likely to spread and which are not.

The PCRF funds this vital research – and also assists those living with cancer through their Amber support and counselling service.

PCRF also run a charity shop on Green Lanes raising much needed funds to support their work.

Alongside the list of things to do on Myddleton Road - don't forget to support our locally based charities - making a significant difference for so many people.
