Enfield Borough Council have begun a consultation process into Sustainability in the introduction to the draft plan its clear that the definition of Sustainability being used is a wide one:

"We are all familiar with the word 'sustainability' but what does this actually mean? Many people think of recycling, renewable energy and climate change. As is shown by the 8 themes (right), sustainability is much more than this.

Sustainability is about saving money by saving energy, creating local jobs, improving our environment, reducing waste and improving public health. It’s also about community leadership and the Council leading by example.

Enfield 2020 has been developed as Enfield’s ambitious Sustainability Programme, with a ‘2020 Vision’ to:

  1. Significantly improve the sustainability of the Borough of Enfield and Enfeld Council by 2020
  2. Deliver significant economic, environmental and social benefits for all of Enfield's stakeholders"

You can view the Enfield2020 Sustainability Programme on the London Borough website. Local people are encouraged to have their say how the proposals could contribute to improving Enfield's sustainability.

There is an online poll allowing residents to comment on the draft document - but it is pretty sparse allowing a simple rating of each of the wide-ranging themes, Consultation is open until October 18th.

Locally our own Sustainable Bowes Park group have been promoting some of these ideas and organising events such as an environment day last year - and in a series of talks and films. The next film screening "The Power of Community" will be on October...
