Until now, workers using the London Underground to commute four or fewer days a week may have been charged more than their full-time colleagues 

Transport for London have reduced the daily fare cap to 20% of the cost of a weekly Travelcard for journeys anywhere in Zones 1 to 6. 

The increasing availability of contactless travel with Apple Pay on iPhone 6 in mid July is making this easier.

Apple Pay is currently supported by the following UK Banks

• American Express
• NatWest
• Nationwide Building Society
• MBNA
• Royal Bank of Scotland
• Santander
• Ulster Bank

Apple Pay will be made available to HSBC customers on July 28, allowing them to register credit and debit cards and purchase goods and services using the new contactless payment platform.

Contactless payment is progressively being introduced on other phone platforms, such as Samsung and "Android platform" based devices

To gain the cheapest fare option, all contactless fares should be made using the same bank card to gain the benefit of what is known as Daily and Weekly Capping

Capping is a feature of pay as you go. It allows you to travel as much as you like in a single day or a week (from Monday to Sunday) and limits the amount you pay for all your travel. If you make multiple journeys in a single week starting on Monday and finishing on the following Sunday using the same contactless payment card, your fares will be capped. For more information CLICK HERE

Daily Capping always calculates the cost of your total daily fares up to the appropriate daily Cap. The system maintains a weekly running total described below:

Monday to Sunday capping always calculates your week of travel from 04:30 on a Monday and finishes on the following Sunday.

If you reach a weekly Monday to Sunday cap before the following Sunday, you will not be charged for any subsequent journeys made with that card, within the zones of the cap, until 04:30 next Monday, provided you continue to touch in and touch out as necessary.

Discounted travel

Discount entitlements can't be added to a contactless payment card, so if you are eligible for free or discounted travel, you should continue using your existing Oyster card or Oyster photocard.

Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes

You can't add Travelcards or Bus & Tram Passes to a contactless payment card. If you want to continue using these tickets, you should continue using your existing Oyster card or Oyster photocard.

LOST or STOLEN card

If your card is lost or stolen it is IMPORTANT that the card is properly CANCELLED by the issuing bank, and the account holder not just issued with a replacement card.See the Sunday Times Article "A touch of madness" Money Section pag...

CONTACTLESS PAYMENT asks for a PIN to be entered.

A contactless payment card may fail to operate if it has not already been activated through use at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and the PIN number entered for either an "account balance" or "cash withdrawal". When subsequently using the contactless option below the current limit of £20 in the payment terminal software (rising to £30 in the autumn), the card issuer may require the entry of the appropriate pin number to verify (authenticate) the card holder.

Visa and MasterCard have confirmed that some retailers in the UK will waive the £20 contactless limit when users pay with Apple Pay via their iPhone, read article here
