This week's edition of The Great British Bake Off on BBC2 was an unlikely place to find a fascinating bit of local history. They carried the story of Tottenham Cake - a local delicacy originally baked by Tottenham Quakers.

The progamme featured Bowes Resident Doreen Brown making a classic Tottenham Cake, a tray-baked light sponge, complete with its characteristic pink icing, traditionally coloured with mulberries from the garden of the Tottenham Friends Meeting House.

You can view the segment of the programme below or on the BBCi Player here and you can read a little more about Tottenham Cake in this article by Liz Ixer.

Tottenham Cake was one of the distinctively local foods available at the recent Tottenham Ploughmans event - celebrating local produce, and it will feature again at Bruce Castle Museum's "Munch and Listen" lunchtime local history talk on November 25th.

Bruce Castle Museum also has a page on the history of Tottenham Cake - which includes a recipe from local historian -and Doreens husband - Peter Brown who is the local expert on Broomfield Park and House.
