DO NOT EVER PUT WATER ON A CHIP FAN FIRE as it causes an explosion!

A fat pan fire fire needs to be covered with a fire blanket (or similar)

AND do not either move the pan or uncover it as the fire will be likely to relight. Be aware that the older and more contaminated the fat the higher the risk of fire.

A smoke alarm woke the occupants of a fourth floor flat in Wolvercote Road, Abbey Wood, in the early hours of Saturday morning after the pan went up in flames.
