The environmental charity ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ recently awarded Alexandra Park a prestigious Green Flag Award for the sixth consecutive year and now calls for the public to vote for their favourite Green Flag site in Keep Britain Tidy’s People’s Choice Award.

Despite the nation having a record 1,448 parks and green spaces to choose from this year, Alexandra Park hopes to remain one of the UK’s top 5 green spaces and improve on their publicly voted fourth place in 2012.

Duncan Wilson OBE, Chief Executive for Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive another Green Flag Award for Alexandra Park especially in its 150th anniversary year.

“This award is evidence of all the excellent hard work that has been invested into the Park by the dedicated team who work around the clock to make sure it is maintained for the public and conserved for the future.

“Last year’s People’s Choice Award saw Alexandra Park voted by the public as the second favourite green space in Greater London and the fourth favourite across the nation from a list of more than 1,000.

“We are hoping that our visitors will once again register their support and that we do even better this year”

The landscaped 196 acres of Grade II listed parkland has held a Green Flag Award since 2008 and has scooped a silver gilt award for a Large Park or Public Garden by London in Bloom in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and The Green Heritage Award every year since 2010.

Paul Todd, Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager said: “Our judges have decided on this year’s winners of the coveted Green Flag Award but the public now have the opportunity to decide which park or green space deserves The People’s Choice Award.”

The vote will close at midday on 1st October and the winner of the 2013 People’s Choice will be announced on 9th October at a ceremony in London.

The Green Flag Award was first launched in 1996 to recognise and reward the best green spaces in the country. It is the national standard for parks and recognises well managed, high quality sites with community involvement.

All Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces are entered into the annual People’s Choice Award vote, which last year saw thousands of votes recorded and resulted in the crowning of Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets as the People’s Choice.

The Green Flag Award scheme is licensed to Keep Britain Tidy, from the Department for Communities and Local Government, and managed across the UK in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Tidy Northern Ireland, the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and the National Housing Federation.
