In 1990, shortly after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela came to our neighbourhood to visit the house where Oliver Tambo lived in exile.

It was not his first visit - back in 1962 Mandela had stayed in the house whilst on an underground visit as a guest of ANC leader Oliver Tambo.

Photographer Vassa Nicolaou who captured these images said: "I took these pictures in Muswell Hill N10 in April 1990. On my way to mum and dads I came across a gathering of people, black limousines, roadblocks, police...I hung around for a while and Nelson Mandela and Winnie arrived. Great stuff!
