Help save The Antwerp Arms in Tottenham

I love pubs. I especially love traditional pubs with a strong local community so when I heard that Tottenham locals were attempting a community buy-out of their local, The Antwerp Arms, I was interested to find out more. I've written about the story for Londonist here. I've also pledged to support the buy-out. Not that I've been to the Annie yet but it sounds excellent and if it was my local I'd be passionately involved.

As the Share Offer closes on 22 May, there's only a few days left. On Saturday they're holding a Pledge Party from 12-3pm with free beer and a Ploughman's Lunch to all pledgers - a good time to visit and work out if it's the sort of thing you could support?

One share costs £50, with a maximum investment of £20,000 per individual. Community Share Offer document here, pledge on Microgenius here.

What a brilliant idea!  A few people have been doing this over the country and one up north somewhere, (can't remember where but it was on tv a couple of years ago) has got a post office inside the pub as well as a little shop with groceries.  I hope it works out for them!

I was visiting a friend in Leeds over the May Day Bank holiday - and we nipped over to Hebden Bridge where a local pub called the Fox and Goose has recently been bought out to be run as a community owned co-operative. Its a decent boozer and hosts loads of community events and activities. I think it's a great idea.

I think that's the one I saw on telly - I am sure it was Hebden Bridge!

Update: the campaign needs an additional £20,000 by noon tomorrow to be in with a chance! http://www.microgenius.org.uk/project/antwerp-arms-association-18

They did it! And have now been granted an extension for raising the full amount to 5 June. So you still have time to visit and get involved :)

Unfortunately, the developer has rejected the bid to buy the pub saying the property is now worth £500k as an investment (ie turned into flats).

The fight continues - supporters are lobbying local MP David Lammy and Haringey to refuse planning permission for change of use.

Finally, the sale has gone through! Congratulations to the Antwerp Arms. That's an amazing community effort.
