Over the years, No. 78 Myddleton Road has been a wood merchants, a DIY shop and - most recently - an interior design shop called 'Deco Living'.

Recently the owners of the unit applied to Haringey Council to convert most of the unit to "storage". 

Following objections from We Love Myddleton Road (WLMR) and other local residents the application has thankfully now been withdrawn.

WLMR commented:


"No. 78 is one of the few buildings on Myddleton Road that still contains a full-size retail unit. 

We cannot afford to lose another good unit on Myddleton Road, especially when multiple established businesses have recently been in touch with us seeking available units on the street to expand into."


They had several specific reasons for local residents to oppose the application: 

  1. Myddleton Road is in a Conservation Area, but the proposed changes to No. 78 would undermine the character and sustainability of the street
  2. The proposal would convert the unit from a Class E Commercial Unit to a Class B8 Storage Unit. However, no justification is provided for such a change
  3. The creation of a storage unit on Myddleton Road is contrary to the Council's Development Plan Document policies DM43, DM44 and DM45. In particular, the proposed development would result in the removal of a prime commercial unit, eroding the primary function, vitality and viability of Myddleton Road Local Shopping Centre, contrary to TCR1: Development in Town and Local Shopping Centres, which states that development will be supported 'provided that the proposal does not harm the vitality and the viability of the centre'. The proposal is also contrary to the Haringey Unitary Development Plan (2006) and Development Management DPD 2016 policy DM43 'Local Shopping Centres'.
  4. The application document and drawings do not match each other.

The applicant's agent has however said that they are looking to revise and then resubmit a new planning application for the site.
